Workshop Program Overview

A unique highlight of this workshop will be hands-on testing at the Manitoba Hydro High Voltage Test Facility.

Partial Discharge (PD) phenomena are localized dielectric breakdowns of a small portion of a solid or liquid electric insulation that is subjected to high voltage stress. PD often precedes an insulation breakdown which can result in cost-intensive repairs and possibly prolonged outages. The measurement of PD is a major criterion for the quality of power systems for assets like cables, power transformers, and rotating machines.

Topics Include:

  • Theory and Introduction to PD
  • Online PD Monitoring
  • Summary of International Standards
  • PD Measurements on Rotating Machines
  • PD Measurements on Medium Voltage and High Voltage Cables
  • PD Measurements of Power Transformers
  • Acoustic Partial Discharge Methods
  • Evaluation of Non-IEC 60270 Partial Discharge Location

Who Should Attend:

Power system researchers, plant electrical engineers, facility managers, high voltage engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, product development engineers, asset management engineers, and power grid maintenance engineers.

Participants Will Learn:

In this workshop, we are going to introduce the basics of partial discharge, the applications and the various advanced measurement techniques. Participants will acquire knowledge on PD measurements on various high voltage apparatus such as power transformers, rotating machines, and cables and become familiar with the possibilities and limitations of partial discharge measurements and their analysis of different test objects.

Dates: August 12-14, 2014

Cost: $1950.00
