PAC World Americas OMICRON Preconference Workshop

The Digital Substation – A History of Testing Technology
A Protection Automation and Control Testing Workshop

Description

The Power and Energy Industry is experiencing a technological renaissance from regulatory, political, and social/environmental forces that undermine the traditional infrastructure model. These forces have changed the economics of the business to a point where traditional solutions must be replaced with the latest digital technology to be feasible. This affects each segment of the power industry, especially the Protection Automation & Control Systems where demands for lower costs, higher integration, and shared information have grown exponentially into the vision of a “Smart Grid”.

Our presentations will focus on each generation of PAC technology and the problem domain faced when testing each one with the period test equipment. We will examine why test methods had to evolve to meet each new design: single-phase injection, three-phase injection, multi-phase injection, multi-source power system simulations; how government and industry standards affect PAC designs, NERC/FERC compliance; and how past, present, and future “Digital” systems can be tested today with the right technique and equipment.

To understand the changes in PAC systems and especially our focus on Acceptance, Commissioning, and Routine Testing requirements of these systems; we provide a workshop that chronicles the historical evolution of PAC testing with an overview of these legacy systems and live demonstrations of the test methods used. The demonstrations cover electro-mechanical, static, early microprocessor, DSP, and modern all digital relay designs. Learn the best practice for addressing each one and how OMICRON can provide solutions to meet all your testing needs.

Is there a future in PAC testing? Or will there be no testing required? Don’t wait to find out, future technology being developed today is expected to disrupt our status quo. Please join us to discuss! We will have a Q&A session at the end of the workshop where you can discuss your challenges with our experts and even perform tests yourself on our demos. See how to improve your productivity with unique learning experience.

The following “Topics Discussed” will be provided as subject white papers: Single Function Testing vs System Testing, End-to-End Testing – What Should You Know?, IEC-61850 9-2 Process Bus, Virtual Isolation When Testing IEC-61850 PAC Systems, Engineer It Before You Test It, The Structured Testing Approach – Test Automation Benefits, Can EtoE Testing Satisfy NERC-FERC?, Adapting Tests to Relay Settings – Not the Other Way Around, Trouble-Shooting the Digital Substation, Standards Based Engineering of Protection Schemes and Systems, Testing or Condition Monitoring?, Maintenance Testing of Multifunctional Distance Protection IEDs, Scheduled Testing of Protection Relays – Yes or No?.
